August 22nd is National Tooth Fairy Day. Or possibly August 28th. Or February 28th. The internet is giving me conflicting information, but I’m going to celebrate it today and just hope that I’m right.
This is supposed to be a day to look back nostalgically on the excitement of leaving a tooth under your pillow as a child–and to remind people to take good care of their teeth as adults. But I’m going to remind you of those terrifying tooth fairies from the movie Hellboy II instead.
Remember these little guys? Maybe you recall the scene where swarms of them eat a crowd of people alive right down to the teeth. Maybe that scene still haunts your nightmares.
Or maybe it’s just me. This scene seriously freaked me out when I first saw it.
The Tooth Fairy is an interesting figure to explore in fiction. What are her origins? What does she do with all those teeth? Hellboy isn’t the only media to put a darker spin on the folklore–there’s something inherently creepy about collecting teeth–but it’s one of my favorite (freaky) takes on it.
What’s your favorite interpretation of the Tooth Fairy in fiction? Did you find the tooth fairies in Hellboy II scary or strangely cute? Let me know in the comments!
